CAUSE

WHAT'S MOBILE BARCODE

Due to the complexity of Chinese key-ins on handsets and the difficulties in marketing experienced by content providers, the mobile applications are still limited in popularity. In order to speed up the development of mobile data applications and call for participation from handset manufacturers and content providers, Open Mobile Internet Alliance has been working with mobile operators, handset makers, content providers and system integrators to promote Mobile Barcode, a common service platform, since 2005. It is hoped that this initiative will drive the development of mobile applications.

Mobile barcodes have been very popular in Japan and South Korea. As long as a barcode reading application is installed to the handset camera, a quick scan immediately brings us into the convenient world of the networks. This approach does not only solve the problems associated with handset key-ins, but also leads to the development of a variety of mobile applications (including mobile tickets, mobile tour guides, product authentications, marketing and purchases) if it is combined with applications such as micro payments and positioning.
